What, you still haven't joined the "cool kids"... Just kidding.
I got mine in August last year as I waited for the faster 3GS version to be released.
The iPhone (or iPod Touch) is a cool piece of kit but what really sets it apart is the App Store and the multitude of applications.
The fact that there are currently over 160,000 apps available means wading through the crap can be difficult and even though some very good apps are only a few dollars, several of them soon add up, but the following information will really help you.
The makers of most apps regularly reduce them in price, often to AUD$1.19 (US$0.99) for a short period to increase sales and get them back to the top of their category (sometimes they are even free for several hours).
Go to www.AppShopper.com and setup a free account.
You can then track the apps you have purchased (My Apps) and also mark apps that you'd like to buy (your Wish List) and the site will send you an e-mail when they are decreased in price.
Some of the applications that I rate highly are:
(the prices below are in Aussie $)

Check out the QAS application :)
Hi dv8troy,
I have a copy of "QAS for iPhone" but didn't mention in in the post as it's been removed from the App Store.
I e-mailed the developer a few months ago, through the app, but he did not reply.
http://www.sinkingpuppies.com/
is the developers web page and there is a link on the right but the info has been removed.
I bet the bosses at QAS told him to pull the app. A real shame as it is a fantastic app.

The guy who developed the QAS app is a good mate of mine (I recently moved to Hobart from Brissie). Your guess was right: he did the app on his own time and when QAS found out they forced him to remove it.
I'm loving your blog! Just applied for the 2011 B Paramedic Practice at UTAS, which (assuming I get in) will make me one of the poor sucker mature age students training up the hard way. I'm trawling the 'net and talking to paramedic friends to get an idea of what I'm in for. So far yours is the only Tas-specific blog I've found, and the info is much appreciated.
Hi Tania,
Thanks for the comment and good luck with the application.
Aussie Ambo blogs are few and far between. All the active one's I know about are in the "Blogs I Read".
I've been a bit slack on the posting front since the October 30th post when I was spoken to, and recently, an e-mail was sent from the management of the DHHS stating that a social media (blogging/facebook/etc) policy document was being prepared for all departmental staff.
Anything I can help you with, just let me know.
Regards
tazambo
